My most highly anticipated event of the year – Anime North~~~ Has passed. =) =} =3 =D
T_T T_T T_T
Brilliantly fun, of course. Luckily it ended on a high note for me as well.
“I just had dinner and the adreliane that lasted me through the past almost a week has worn off.I’m typing with my eyes closed, abnd checking once in a while to makessure I’m still typing on the word document”
The above quote was unedited from Sunday night. That is almost me sleep talking! Real sleep talking example later.
[For the exciting happenings at AN and not at home or in a hotel somewhere, please skip forward to Friday or mid Saturday. This report has the maximum accuracy that I can achieve - though mistakes may occur due to faulty memory on sleep-deprived high for many days.]
Preparations for this costume started 7 months ago when Adam and I decided to go as Sebastian and Ciel from Kuroshitsuji. Since I’m small, short-haired, and so flat that I barely make it onto the alphabet, the 12-year old boy seemed like a good choice.
Flickr photos HERE.
For those not familar with Kuroshitsuji:
“In a manor house on the outskirts of Victorian era London, butler Sebastian Michaelis serves Ciel Phantomhive, the twelve-year-old head of an English noble family as well as a toy and candy empire. Sebastian carries out any task required by his master and solves the problems plaguing England with ease and perfections because of his demonic lineage and Faustian contract with his master.”
Ciel Phantomhive – Circus Outfit

Sebastian Michaelis

But anyway! Fabric buying started a long time ago when I was in Montreal… But the sewing didn’t actually begin until I was back in Windsor where my sewing machine lie and free time was not so rare. Minus the job and school related errands, I guess I had about a week to work on it. If you had tried to contact me in May and I didn’t answer or comment on your blog or something… This was what happened… Everyday in that last week, I sewed until exhaustion and couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore.
On Monday, Aisha and Adam came over to work on costuming. Aisha worked on her steampunk outfit, Adam worked on the Sebastian wig and sometimes helped me with Ciel. We were doubtful that that Ciel wig would arrive in time from Ebay. We knew the Sebastian wig would not arrive at all. To solve the problem, Adam bought two Halloween witch wigs from the party, took apart one of them and added a few wefts from the second wig in between the wefts on the first. We straightened it by pouring a ton of hot water down the wig. It made a hideous mess in the bathtub and on my bed; the long haired head in the tub was like a scene from a horror movie.
Dinner was made from whatever lived in my fridge. (Spicy ground chicken x celery, chicken noodle soup with pasta, sweet tofu dessert, hot dog octopi, pork buns.) At the end of a very looong work day, we went out to play at 9pm with Aisha’s painted steampunk guns in the newly built playground nearby.
Discovery: Aisha could go the highest on the swing and Adam was scared of heights.
Wednesday was the last day to buy last minute fabric. And buy I did! On that day I sewed from waking to sleeping at dawn. On Thursday, I slept for 3 hours in the morning and didn’t sleep at all after that. This was the maximum point of stressed-induced-sadness for this costume and I kept thinking about to giving up and going to bed. It didn’t help that I was so tired that I kept nodding off while kneeling or sitting on the ground, tracing patterns… After spending so much time and effort on this outfit (and Adam already having his outfit from the same anime), I told myself that failure wasn’t an option. If I truly wanted this costume I will survive and stay awake by just willpower! (And Red Bull *hearts*)
Adam and I had our hair cut on Thursday afternoon. The hairstylist was horrified at the terrible quality of the wig material and the thinness of the hair. She told us that it wouldn’t work at all and refused to cut it at first. We eventually coaxed her into trying by telling her not to worry about any mistakes. Besides, whatever she did would be way better than what we could do anyway. ^^ She didn’t charge us for the cut because she thought it extremely repulsive. XD Mother said that Adam looked like a transvestite and couldn’t stop giggling after she saw him with the wig on.
But it looked okay, especially after a ton of got2b hairspray and two hairclips. After all, it is only for cosplay and not everyday wear!
Now to interrupt with a list of the pieces I needed for the outfit (starred (*) are the ones that I did not finish in the end.) By Wednesday, I had bought all the materials needed for this costume plus more.

Friday
I sewed till Jessica’s parents from my place at 30 past noon. I panicked when the time came and packed the sewing machine and three bags of fabric for the ride.
The Ciel wig arrived!!! But I couldn’t get it because Adam had already left Windsor… Nobody was there to sign for it when it got delivered… and the mailman carried it around in Windsor while Jess and I were on our way to Toronto. *sigh* So, so, close.
Items obtained so far:
- · Black hair
- · Eyepatch
- · Ring and earrings
- · Neck frill
- · Half of black Jacket
- · Ugly unfinished blue shorts
- · Striped shirt without sleeve collars
- · Skin coloured pantyhose
- · Thigh stockings without lace
- · Unfinished boot covers
- · Hat support made from Bristol board
Sewed on the car while Jess slept most of the way. I tried to help her with some calculus curve sketching here, but nothing worked and I couldn’t focus on the question at all.
Items obtained:
- · Both thigh stockings now have lace
- · Sleeve collars and waist band for the shorts are cut and pinned but unsewn
…but! The costume wasn’t still finished by the time we got to the Holiday Inn around 5:30 pm. What to do?!? I laid out all my pieces out on the couch and just tried to sew as much as I can… The shorts remained disgustingly poofy and frayed on both the top and bottom. BLEH!
I hated it so much. Couldn’t possibly wear the terrible shorts to the Kuroshitsuji photoshoot at 6:00pm.
Items obtained:
- · Chest frill- half done.
Went to the photoshoot anyway in my civvies (civilian clothing) by myself. I passed a Kuroshitsuji cosplay group near the Doubletree with their own private photoshoot.

(OMG, I recognized the photographer from the Montreal otakuthon forums! Life points connection—DING!) Anyhow, I asked the red Ciel why they weren’t at the photoshoot. Apparently they this was the only timeslot for the private photoshoot and they were saddened to miss the big Kuroshitsuji gathering happening at the same time. I told them that I was looking for my friends who were at that photoshoot in the Rencen hotel and asked for directions to how to walk there.
Jessica, Aisha and Adam were there already. Holy crap! What a gigantuous group! Everyone was just sitting in (many very Ciel-like on the decorative couches), but still their own little clichés. XD. Not being in costume as I was then, I was too shy to speak to any of them. t_t So we stood there and enjoyed a little get together with friends while looking and commenting on the amazing cosplayers that populated the entiiiire lobby. Madam Reds and pink dress Ciel were sooo well done!

After leaving the photoshoot the four of us walked down a super-steep hill and was greeted by the red Ciel and Undertaker that I had met earlier.
Me to the red Ciel while gesturing to my Sebastian (Adam) and company: “Look! I found my friends!”
We talked. The Undertaker attacked Adam with *hearts* while the rest of us laughed hysterically. I don’t remember what was said here, but the two of them stayed in kind of in character and touched hands and traced fingers down each other’s face and everything!
(FYI, Undertaker is creepy reaper that loves souls, coffins. And I guess he likes Sebby too?)

Forget personal bubbles and general social awkwardness! This is an anime convention we’re talking about! Anything goes and people, especially those cosplaying are allowed to cling and be clinged to. I got asked for a few hugs by being Ciel. ^^

London Bridge is Falling Down, falling down, falling down… The red Ciel sang.

Bocchan…! Help!
No way. I’m too busy taking pictures. =P

Went back to Aisha and Adam’s hotel so that Aisha could get changed out of her killer steampunk boots. Checked out the BJD doll market for a bit. OMG, such adorable clothing and accessories for such adorable dolls. Aisha bought some really cute items for Haelyn. (Seriously, those glow in the dark star filled socks are waaay too cool, wish I had a pair!) Carrying Haelyn around the con was so much fun because he fits perfectly into crooks of the human arm and chest <3 Kindda like a very thin, beautiful, and non-fidgety baby. We generally get two very different groups of people who stop to talk to us. One group wants to take photos of Ciel and Sebastian, the other asks about the Aisha’s BJD. The two groups are always mutually exclusive!

Upon leaving the doll market, I went back sewed in the hotel for the rest of Friday. At night, since I planned to stay up and create even mooore pieces, I moved all my stuff from Jessica’s room to Aisha and Adam’s.
Item obtained:
- · Two Suspender tubes sewn and ironed
- · Attempted at the waistband for the ugly shorts
- · Collar for the black jacket drawn and cut out!
o LIGHTBULB IDEA: In my rush to get out of the house, I had forgotten to bring the black leather-like-vinyl to make the collar on the jacket! O_O!! Oh no! But it’s okay, I have an idea! We used the side of the following fabricland bag for the sharp black collar. (Credits for the pattern goes to Aisha. Thanks, yay~)

“Proud Moment of (last minute) Cosplay Ingenuity”
After Aisha and her mother fell asleep (and Adam tried to fall asleep), I kept going… d^.^b (Go willpower! GO! GODSPEED~) Later Adam woke up and told me he couldn’t sleep, and so we moved the sewing machine to the hallway lobby in front of the elevator, sat on the ground, and continued there.
At one point, (~4am) four guys came over to the elevator. (Adam had gone back to the room to find thread for me.)
“Still working at this time of night?”
“Yep! I’ve been sewing for 48 hours straight with barely any sleep!”
All four of them clapped! One asked me if I’d like for them to bring back some food. I declined the offer but thanked them.
And then a business man came to the elevator on his way to take the train to Montreal. (wow! An actual mundane staying at the hotel where AN takes place!) I wished him a good day.
At 5:50 am. I crashed while machine sewing the white band onto the hat.
Me: “…The manager…”
Adam: “What?”
Me: “… The manager wants to talk to you.”
Adam: “The manager? What are you talking about?!”
I thought about this question and immediately awoke. Looks like I micro-napped and started to sleeptalk. XP Since this is terrible as this is a sign that I can’t last any longer without sleep, we went to bed at 6am.
The sleeping arrangements were:
- Adam on the bed
- Aisha’s mom on the floor to the right side of the bed.
- Me on the floor to the left side of the bed.
- Aisha on the reclining couch to the left side of the bed and to the left of me.
Horray for the hotel for having extra blankets and six overstuffed pillows for the huuuge bed.
Items obtained:
- · Chest frill sewn
- · Black Jacket collar attached
- · Hat mostly made
Saturday
Missed so, so, many panels from sewing and putting on costume till noon. (The shorts are much smaller at the waist and the hard band of interfacing there is not stretchable. So it can’t stay on without pins or a zipper.) Putting the shorts on always requires something like half an hour of pinning. For this reason I didn’t drink much water – this plan worked, of course. ><
I can’t believe Aisha and Adam put up with me like this. (This can’t happen again! Staying up to sew and making your friends stay up as well is terrible on my part!) Though I’m glad I finished in the end and my Sebastian enjoyed missing all the panels and sewing with me and I got to experience all the things I that I did. This CAN NOT happen again! Aisha says we’ll have to make our costume and wear them together at the mall a week before the con and video tape each other next time. ^^ (OMG, like how FightingDreamersPro records their hangouts? That’d be much love.)
Occasionally, Aisha would leave us to see a panel or two, but she always ends up walking quite far back to the hotel and meeting up for some reason. I think she missed her mecha panel and other events and panels from this… =(
Finally went out in costume around 2pm! ^^;;

I’m surprised that the pantyhose look like real skin in the photos. It’s actually shades darker than my uber pale thighs…! This is my first time wearing shorts in public after elementary school. =O)
Saw the panel for Harry Potter Slash. Meghan was there in the front row as expected! People talked about interesting romantic pairings in the fandom (oddities like Voldemort x Dumbledore and others) For a Yaoi panel, it wasn’t sexual at all! I learned the most well written romance fanfictions are about the marauders – namely Sirius x Lupin – because younger fans may have trouble connecting with the older characters. The marauder fans are older. And the least written about pairing is Neville x anybody.
The four of us met to see the all-audience 404s. Voices zoned out and I suddenly crashed again and slept for a bit while sitting in the last row. I tried to watch but didn’t find it extremely funny… And so Adam and I left to go see the “drama con”. We peaked inside the only door which placed us right beside the panellists in the front. 10-15 minutes late for the panel. They looked at us and said “Come in! There are seats in the back.” We walked down the only route to the back (right down the middle of the room) One of the panellists commented out of the blue, “Wow! You’re pretty!” The audience sitting in the panel and I laughed at unexpected compliment.
Drama con turned out to be a panel about the anime and manga “Dramacon”, not actually about J/K/C dramas as we were expecting. We asked the people beside us for the exit. Looks like they were thinking of the exact same thing. ^^;; The four of us found the back door out.
At some point in this hour, we got stopped for pictures in a busy hallway, so we showed the ‘cool shoulder pose to someone’. ^^ After walking for a few more steps, another photographer stopped us and asked for a picture. He asked if we made our costume ourselves. I said that I did though Adam had bought his. But that was okay and the Anime North Photographer gave us both a little red “Anime North Hall Cosplay Award” ribbon. ^^
[insert photo when camera battery pack is found]
Yay! He doesn’t give it out to everybody, but I’m sure he has a lot of those little red ribbons. Whatever, we felt good about it.
We went back to the hotel so that Adam could change from his formal shoes and I could iron the neck frill that had been bothering me all day with the threat of falling apart. Aisha came back to the hotel after a while and three of us left for the 404s to meet up with Jessica.
After making a detour to grab some food with Adam (chicken and cheese burgers, poutine) Aisha had already gotten food earlier, we went to the (late night, mature audience only) 404s Improv show to meet up with Jessica and Aisha.
[Link to some youtube vids here when available]
A group of improv pros played anime related improv games on stage, eliminating contestants each round. The games were like the show “whose line is it anyway” except anime north related. I think the general knowledge was if they did gay actions (like kiss, hug, or lie on each other back-to-back while pretending to be in a bunk bed), or made gay jokes, they automatically win points with the audience. ^^ Once they asked the audience, “Raise your hand if you’re not gay or female!” Maybe less than a quarter of the audience had their hand up. (Does that mean more females attend the con? Or maybe many males have slow mental processing time? Or that straight males will pretend to be gay at a convention? Or maybe half of the male population *really is gay*?) XD
After being bored like crazy and sleeping through the first show, I didn’t expect much for this one either. But…!!! It turned out to be AMAZING! These people are brilliant to be able to come up with the hilarious lines right on the spot. As people left during the long intermission, the four of us moved further and further up the rows. Till we were very, very close to the front. ^^
It was quite late after the show ended, so Jess went home so that she’d be able to wake up tomorrow to get autographs. The two As and I went tried to go see the loud glowsticks filled Jpop dance party, but at 20 minutes till the end, they closed the door to newcomers, though people were allowed to go *back* into the dance. Being the honourable people they are, Aisha and Adam wouldn’t let me go in to take a quick peak. *pout*
Then we tried to see “Gay Sex 101”. …but! Aisha was just a few days away from 18 and Adam didn’t bring his ID! (<== I know, yes, we do drag him along to Yaoi panels. ^^)
Being the only person allowed in, I listened for a few seconds:
“I think sex in the bathtub works if there are two small people.”
“I’m small!”
“Oh yeah, I tried that once, but hit my head off the metal rung.”
XDDDDD lol
… Next year I’ll try to listen to the entire panel? Yaoi North cannot remain forever mysterious.
We walked around Rencen for a while. The games room were waaay better than last year and it was spread out over several rooms, and not just one big room. I couldn’t really find the puzzle games room with Puyo Puyo… BUT, we did find…! The werewolves game. Basically it’s like mafia with a few twists.
There are a few werewolves in the village. It’s kill or be killed between the werewolves and the non-werewolves. At night, the werewolves kill one person and magic happens. During the day, people tell of their suspicions, ask questions to the dead (who comes in to the middle of the circle, while making ghost sounds) and we then all vote to kill another person.
With 17ish people this was the biggest werewolf game they had! ^^ The regulars spoke in a medieval role-playing style~ Wahhh~
At the beginning of each game the players are randomly assigned roles via cards. Here are the possible roles:
- · Villager – no special powers
- · Witch – has one potion to heal, one to kill
- · Little girl – can wake up at night to squint and figure out who the werewolves are
- · Sage – can flip over anyone’s card during the night to see what role they have
- · Cupido – chooses two people to be lovers. They must try to defend each other as much as possible. If one lover dies the other must dramatically die with them
- · Hunter – If killed, can choose another person to be killed
- · Werewolves – the bad guys
There is a game master who directs the game, sets the setting with descriptions, and tells us when everyone’s turns are. The turning on and off the lights during the night and day made the setting even more real. <3
The first game we played, we had a triple kill in the first night! That was a rare event! The werewolves killed the cool suspicious talkative merchant and village chief who turned out to be ‘the hunter’. The hunter killed someone who was ‘the little girl’ and one of the lovers, thus killing the other lover as well. Brilliant!
After that turn someone asked Adam why he wasn’t a werewolf.
“Because I’m not! … I mean, I’m *only* a butler who serves the Phamtomhive family.”
another one concluded, “Sebastian is a demon butler, he must be a werewolf!”
With this most people voted to kill Adam during the day turn. Adam was the sage. And so the villagers idiotically killed the one of the most useful power on their side in that game. XD Adam shuffled a lot during the Sage’s turn previously when he was pointing to people and raising his hand, I knew his card before it was revealed! *proud of self for figuring something out* I also figured out a werewolf because she hesitated and shrugged when voting off the one that’s obviously the werewolf (Aisha – the only one left in the village wearing jeans), but I was killed that night before I was allowed speak my suspicions in the next day. *pout*
Aisha stayed to play another game while Adam and I went to the late night Yaoi showing next door. Really masculine yaoi. Bleh. =P Guess who was there though? Undertaker from Friday!
XDDD She attached herself to Adam, who isn’t quite as shy as he used to be. I laughed.
Sunday
I ate food in the morning! YAY! Wasn’t that hungry tho.
OMG there was an Uber Cute Chibi Cloud!!! You know, kid cosplays are always really cute because children are generally not ugly. But their outfits are also generally are not really great because parents are rarely into cosplay and wigs are too uncomfortable and stuffy to wear. But this cloud was great! The materials his top and shoulder armour were accurate, the wig was beautifully cut and styled. And his toothy grin was so big and cute! The two guardians with them were encouraging him to give out hugs after people take piccies of him. Awwwwww~ Aisha said that I got an extra big hug because at that point the male travelling with the boy asked to take my picture and chibi Cloud came over and placed his arm around my waist for the photo. ^^ *Cuteoverload meltdown*
(There are only two people in the entire world that has this picture. I’m certainly not one of them unfortunetly… ;_;)
But here’s a photo of the boy-Cloud.

(Okay guys, despite liking Johnny’s Entertainment and finding young boys adorable like teddy bears, this is totally platonic and not a fetish for me!) =P
The last event of Anime North was the Sunday Kuroshitsuji photoshoot. We found a little bright place behind Rencen completely empty before we filled it with our high happy otaku presence. This photoshoot travelled by word of mouth only – TallPrettyFemale Sebastian & Ciel had invited us Sunday morning.
On the way to the photoshoot, we found another circus Ciel! She was really good! (And she sewed hers in two days! OMG, wow.) I bomborded her with questions on how she solved various problems with the costume. We traded emails later… ARg! I wish I lived in Toronto! They’re having a Kuroshitsuji cosplay picnic there in June. *sigh*
After finding the group, I left to fiddle with my impractical hat and eyepatch in the washroom. Aisha came to get me because the group had moved itself outside. When I entered the photoshoot, someone exclaimed, “Hey! It’s another Ciel!” and they all seemed genuinely glad to see me. (See? This is why I love the anime fandom. One always feels welcome even amongst strangers because of this large common interest. Everyone is so incredibly nice to each other, perhaps also partially due to the fact that many anime focus greatly on people and friendship, some even have characters that are almost unrealistic in their gentleness. But that kind of personality impacts the fans to improve their behaviour as well… And people into yaoi and Japanese culture tend to be a little bit more open-minded than the general population too. Anyway, I love the community. Very accepting of everyone… ^^)
So anyway. One of the Sebastians brought chocolate, biscuits, and dog bone shaped cookies! (haha) I was offered the first piece of chocolate truffle. Hmmm… ultra-sweet-milk-and-white-chocolate-swirled butterfly. The other circus Ciel and I took a picture with our hand hovering over the delicious goodness. And then we had a photo of all the Ciels eating chocolates. It was hard to grab things with no depth preception – I kept missing when I tried to take the chocolate and crackers. We also had a line of Sebatian kneeling for line of the Ciels. (my idea~) People just shouted out various interesting poses and the rest happily obliged. Dead Ciels on the grass was pretty interesting as well. The cool girl-Sebastian stood in the middle of the pile, and the dead Ciels formed a circle with feet pointing towards the middle of where the Sebastian was standing. What a cool shot! (my idea also~) Of course, the feeling from inside the circle (lying on the grass, sun in face, eyes closed, surrounded by cosplayers) was indescribably awesome. ^^
There was only one Ciel there that didn’t have royal blue on her costume. Someone commented while the Ciels pretended to be dead and elegant on the grass.
“You’re like a blob of red amongst a sea of blue!”
I laughed and struggled to regain my straight face to act like a dead Ciel. The word ‘blob’ described Ciel’s elegance perfectly.
I didn’t know how to pose at all! Kind of just looked around and copied other Ciel’s poses for the most part. XD
Besides a real Chinese Lau, Adam was the only guy cosplayer at the Kuroshitsuji photoshoot! And so the shortest Ciel had the tallest Sebastian~ Which is awesome because we were probably the only duo that could do a pose where I sat on Adam’s shoulder. (Adam got the idea from the last episode of kuroshitsuji where Sebastian carried Ciel on his shoulder while climbing a ladder.) People get very impressed at this pose. Hopefully, Adam didn’t hurt his shoulder too much holding me up because as two thirds of his weight, I’m quite heavy! He got really good at this near the end and the coming down movement became smooth and comfortable. I have no idea how it works still because I can’t see behind or below me. But the view from the top of all the heads of photographers is exciting.
I had to meet Jess and her parents at 2pm, so I left the photoshoot early, entrusting my Sebastian to the other Ciels and Aisha. But what happened after that? … I have no idea. I’m still looking for photos!~
Before I left I announced loudly, “I have to leave Anime North now to catch my ride home. This has been my first cosplay and everything had been a lot of fun. Thank you guys so much for being so friendly and welcome! <3”
I got many hugs as I left.
*smiles*

Details of Body Abuse. XD — Not involving anyone else but yours truly! Biology galore and all the gory details.
- Chest binding! For many hours after taking the binding off, my chest stayed tight. XD There was some pain in the middle of visiting the dealers room, and I was kind of worried about getting a bone bruise or something, but it was only temporary. Always hurt to sneeze though. And on Sunday I binded hard enough that sneezes actually stopped on the intake of breath. How interesting! Earlier before AN, I binded with duct tape for 6 hours to see if it was okay. A bit of skin ripped off in at least four different places and will leave little tape scars. XD I binded with packing tape at AN. It requires a lot more wraps around the chest to get decently flat, but sweat and water underneath the tape effectively removes it from the skin without pain. I just cut right through the tape in the front upon removal and take it all off very quickly.
- Ears. Magnetic earrings hurt after a few hours… It leaves a little circular shaped imprint on your ear. My hat was supported by ribbon on the spot behind my ears. More pain…!
- Food and water — or the lack thereof. Who wants to go out and eat when a convention is going on next door?? So the physical needs of my body was easily neglected… And I lost 2-3 lbs over 3 days. Mission “Let’s get back to my normal weight before McGill happened, for the sake of cosplay” – Achieved! Now to stay this way….Not gonna work. I probably will gain back two just by drinking water.
- Eyes. Having wore the eyepatch for the entire Saturday, my right eye teared up behind the waterproof vinyl. The warm moist spot behind the eyepatch became the perfect breeding spot for a bacteria and my right eye became really, really red when I got back at 4am. And did its job of focusing slower than normal from the constant pressure on the eyeball. Later I told this to the other Ciels on the Sunday photoshoot. Apparently, most just take the eyepatch off their right eye while walking around. Or their eyepatch doesn’t irritate their eye that much.
Me: *explains the story* “… and when I got home last night, my right eye was really, really red!”
Other Ciels: “OoOooooooo. O_o”
A Sebasitan: “My eyes are red too.” (<== Red contacts. *laughs* ^^)
I got eyedrops today and went to see the clinic about the infection. Yay~ Mother has an eye infection as well in her right eye. It reappears every once in a while. Horray. Permanent damage due to cosplay #2!
Okay, so Ciel’s right eye is purple. Mine is red!
- Also, the brain learns adjust to having one eye having a lot of exposure to sunlight, while the other one is in total darkness. So when the eyepatch is taken off, the world kind of looks like this. And I saw doubles at one point as well. The focusing ability of the right eye is back to normal now though, I think. (now = Monday noon)

Perhaps my life’s focus will return back to normal as well. But it *is* more fun this way!
